There are several challenges to armoring up a big costume. For instance, although the Mech's exoskeleton isn't actually armored, some parts (especially the legs) take a fair amount of abuse and must be up to the task. This must be balanced with the constant need to be mindful of the weight because, remember, there is a person inside the mech. That means it can't be top-heavy, and has to have a good center of gravity. Once you've got the armor sorted out, you've got to weather it. Simply slap a coat of paint and some decals on your menacing mech and it'll look like it just strolled out of a showroom. Not very menacing, that. We wanted the WIRED mech to look like it'd seen a battle or two or 12, so it was suitably detailed to create convincing wear and tear.

In today's installment of the making of the mech, check out how the FX wizards at Legacy Effect and the Stan Winston School took the WIRED mech from a bare-bones skeleton to a fully painted menace.
