It's the little details that takes a costume from good to great, and the WIRED Mech's details included several GoPro cameras, motion-activated sound effects, and an impossibly cool voice modulating system.
The pros at Legacy Effects and the Stan Winston School are used to designing suits and effects for movies--but the WIRED Mech performed live at Comic-Con, which raised further issues. Plus, since it's the WIRED Mech, there has be some cutting-edge technology involved. Luckily, more than one member of the mech-building team knew his way around an Arduino.
Even though there were no hydraulics involved in the mech's movement, it didn't feel right without the sound. So Legacy Effects mocked up a motion sensor so whenever the mech took a step, it sounded like a factory. Likewise, the mech can't just sound like a normal human--so Legacy Effects installed a sound-modulating microphone and speaker to give the WIRED Mech a voice.
In today’s installment of the making of the mech, the WIRED Mech learns a few tricks by means of some cool technology, and at the end, the one and only Stan Lee makes an appearance.
