The Simpsons creators are on a roll with their couch gags lately.

For their most recent "Treehouse of Horror" episode they tapped Guillermo del Toro, who crammed his intro with more horror-geek references than an issue of Fangoria. Now, they're taking on The Hobbit – turning Marge into Gandalf and Moe into Gollum, a poor schmuck who can't get laid until he puts a ring on his lady-friend, who then disappears (natch).

The gag's real highlights, though, are the humorously long sequences of walking (just like in An Unexpected Journey!) and the appearance of Smaug – who gets more screen time here than in any trailer we've seen for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug thus far.

The intro is for this Sunday's episode titled "Four Regrettings and a Funeral," which deals with the death of a local Springfielder. Presumably this is the mystery character the show announced it would be killing off this season, which TMZ reported won't be Edna Crabapple (the character voiced by Marcia Wallace, who died earlier this month). The episode will also feature MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, who will guest-voice as herself.
