When the first Blu-ray edition of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens came out in April, we broke down the seven deleted scenes included on the disc. That bonus material ranged from relative minutia (X-Wings gearing up for light speed) to fan catnip (Kylo Ren searching the empty Millennium Falcon on Starkiller Base), but it was still a pared-down selection.
Thankfully, since Disney is loath to limit the Force Awakens post-release money train to a single stop, today sees the release of the 3D Collector’s Edition, a four-disc set that includes even more additional features, including a commentary track from director J.J. Abrams and and a handful of featurettes. But the real reason to get this super-stuffed version is that is the two still-unreleased deleted scenes. Here’s everything you need to know about them and how they build on expanded universe literature and reference the original trilogy.
Remember when General Hux is holding his own little Nuremberg rally to pump up the First Order army, and launches the Starkiller Base's weapon to annihilate the Hosnian System? Just as the planet-destroying laser reaches Hosnian Prime, there’s a closeup of a woman who hasn’t appeared in the film. That’s Korr Sella, a Resistance officer who has a larger role in the Force Awakens novelization and the Leia-centric midquel novel Bloodline. In the deleted scene, Leia sends as her an envoy to the Galactic Senate of the New Republic in the hope of catalyzing government action against the First Order.
Had it been included in the movie, the scene would have introduced Korr’s character much earlier, and given a reason for why she’s standing at the Galactic Senate on Hosnian Prime—rather than simply being the poster child for the millions killed by the First Order’s superweapon.
In the theatrical cut of the film, the last the audience sees of the bulbous junkyard boss (voiced by Simon Pegg) is when he’s shaking his fists in anger as Rey and Finn abscond in the Millennium Falcon. In this deleted scene, Plutt tracks the ship to Maz Kanata’s cantina on Takodana, where he confronts Rey once again—only this time, she’s got her new friend Chewbacca with her. If you were wondering who'd win in a fight between a Wookiee and a Crolute, now you've got your answer. In Star Wars' original Holochess scene, Han Solo advises R2-D2 to let Chewie win because his species is liable to “pull people’s arms out of their sockets when they lose.” Turns out that wasn’t an idle threat.
