How we tested All the apps were tested on Apple and Android phones updated to the latest software. For Android, WIRED used an LG G3 running KitKat (4.4.2). For Apple, an iPhone 6 with iOS 8 was used.

WIRED gave the phone to 15-time marathon and six-time ultra runner Kieran Alger, who ran with each app for a week through a mixture of built-up streets, open parks and on the treadmill. WIRED compared GPS accuracy, web tools, training plans and community features, as well as any premium content.
